By promoting this exfoliation within the pore lining, salicylic acid can help keep pores clearer over time and reduce the likelihood of new clogs forming.

Clogged pores typically develop through a combination of excess sebum production and abnormal shedding of skin cells. For more persistent or moderate acne, salicylic acid is often used alongside other treatments. Retinoids may help normalize skin cell turnover, while benzoyl peroxide can target acne-causing bacteria. These combinations are frequently recommended in dermatology to address multiple contributing factors of acne simultaneously. However, introducing multiple active ingredients too quickly can increase irritation, so gradual integration into a skincare routine is generally advised.

Although salicylic acid is widely considered effective for managing clogged pores, results typically develop over several weeks of consistent use. Overuse or high concentrations may lead to dryness, irritation, or compromise of the skin barrier, particularly in sensitive individuals. It is important to balance exfoliation with hydration and sun protection, as exfoliated skin can become more vulnerable to environmental stress. Individuals with persistent, severe, or treatment-resistant acne are encouraged to consult a qualified dermatologist to determine the most appropriate and safe treatment plan.
